Default Signifcant speed improvements with XP Pro?

    Hi there

I've got my hp2133 with preinstalled Vista Home Baisc and I'm thinking about downgrading it to Windows XP Pro, 'cause as a university student I can get it for free in my country. But before I install it, I want to make sure that I will get some major speed improvements, especially at start ups, because I actually like Vista.

At the moment I have 1gb of ram, but the 2gb stick is coming this week. Will the 2gb ram already bring some speed improvements to Vista?

Thanks in advance for any comments

i use vista and love it. i have a 1.6gHz cpu, 2gb, 7200 RPM SATA

i did google: vista umpc tweaks

i followed ALL the directions on several pages and even went a bit further on services they did not list.
i did not follow the recommendation that recommended disabling SuperFetch and ReadyBoost

Thanks for the tip, gonna try the 10 tips list I've found tomorrow. In addition, I've already cleaned the auto-start list a bit, which already improved the speed a bit

Do you still have the links to the specific sites?

    EDIT:
I've used these http://www.pocketables.net/2008/08/how-to-improve.html (besides the hibernation advice) and the safe options from this page http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm.

I used a lot of tweaks for vista, and the certanly improved the performance, to a point where it was posible, and even good, to work.

However i installed xp (since i upgraded the hard disk, so i decided to try it) and it works a lot faster, everything, from the boot time, aplications, games, internet videos etc.

I was happy with my vista machine after the tweaks, but now that i tried xp on my mininote there is no way i would go back to vista.

The installation of xp however, is not exactly a simple task (specially since i dont have an external optical drive) but the time it took is time well spent, and now i can install a couple of programs that i need for study and i had to install in a virtual machine before, and everything works just fine.

i'm gonna start a new thread. i'm sticking with vista at the moment and know how long a conversion could take me.
