The problem is the xp dirvers, i just intalled xp and the mic with worked fine under vista, got screwed.

The solution is to intall the vista driver in XP, here are the insructions

Scroll near the end of the page, there you will find the patch and the instructions for the instalation, i did it and it works just fine now.

thank to david for your information

    but I can't find it

please give me a direct link

    one question

just install the Vista driver instead of XP driver

    will be fine isn't?

because the date of the Vista driver is older than Xp driver

First uninstall your current sound driver
then you have o download this
    http://www.divshare.com/download/4360795-70e

There are a few files there, but the one you need, if i remembre correctly is kb888111.exe, im not sure about it since i renamed it on my hard drive, if it does not work i could send the file you via email, or place it in a place for everone to download if you have a suggestion, but i think its that one.

You have to run it, and then try to install the vista driver (get it from the official diriers page) this driver wont install, since its for vista, not xp, but it will be uncomnpressed in your hard drive (take note of the directory).

Then go to the control panel, system, hardware, device manager (im not entireley sure about the names, since my windows is in spanish, but you should get the idea)

There the sound device should appear as a yellow question mark, from there you can install the driver, use the option for a specific location and incude the directory with the vista driver on the search. It should install automatically.

That will work, althought you will recive a warning message whe your pc restarts, to avoid this, you have to restart, type msconfig in the run command, go to the boot tab, and un check the smax4pnp box.

That should do it, again if you need the file i could send it to you via mail (pm me your address i guess) or point mo to a place where i can place it for ppl to download, since this seems a quite common problem.

Default gave up on internal mic, wireless headset works great!

This mini-note was actually a gift to my daughter, but I fuss with all the time. I fussed with the xp sound drivers and was never satisfied with the mic. I had been debating getting her wireless headset so when she plays music I don't have to hear the low-fi noise. So I decided to kill 2 birds and got the Logitech Clear Chat wireless USB headset. Worked right out of the box perfectly. I went into skype options and changed the the mic and speaker devices to be the logitech headset and it worked. I had previously unchecked the box saying "let skype adjust your audio" and had the mic level turned up all the way, so i was getting a little echo. So i checked the box to let skype adjust the audio, and the echo went away and everything was balanced. They are decent headphone for itunes, but not the best be any stretch. But for my kid, the wireless is great and it put to rest the mic issue at the same time. If a driver fix comes up that will be great, but it probably still won't sound as good as the headset. BTW, the wireless usb headset is plug and play (no bluetooth "pairing" or driver installation required). After we use them for a few days we'll post again.

dj, did you ever check that the microphone boost was enabled on the built-in mic (Windows XP/Vista Option)... headset will ultimately sound best since microphone boost will also magnify background ambient noise.

Default mic boost not much help

On my unit, the mic boost made little difference. i followed the directions on installing the patch first, then the vista drivers posted on this site. the mic worked poorly, so i tried the drivers from hp's site that were newer, and the mic wouldn't work at all. so i switched back to drivers listed on this site. So far so good on the wireless Logitech headset though. The USB key that plugs into the computer is about the size of an average flash drive. When you plug it in, it mutes the speakers and mic on the computer. In about the same amount of time it takes for a flash driver to be ready, the headphones connect and are ready to go. I'm using them to listen to my itunes now. Its pretty neat how the boom mic swivels up to be along side the headband, so the mic boom is out of sight. It mutes the mic when you swivel it up like that. This probably invites disagreement, but I really like Bose headphones (probably because I have some high freq loss in both ears). If Bose made a headset with mic with the same wireless usb design, I would go that route. These sound like a $20 pair of headphones that cost $80 because of the wireless design and mic. But they are pretty comfortable, wireless, and fix the webcam mic issue. I would still like to have the built in mic fixed so my daughter could use skype on the go without having to pack headphones. Thanks for your suggestion though.

if you're using skype, try varying the volume pickup of the mic manually. the skype default is to 'auto manage your mic volume', unselect that option and manually increase the mic volume pickup to a higher level/maximum. that worked for me
