My Windows auto-update downloaded SP3. Since it has been released for a while I decided to install it. Restart hung up on the XP page and would not complete the installation. Tried several restarts. Since it never completed the installation, I could not find the update to remove it in the safe mode.

Tried at least ten earlier dates in the recovery mode and it would still lock up on start. I had given up and thought I would have to do a complete reinstall. Tried one more recovery date and it finally worked. I am running SP2 now with everything working just fine.

Think I'll leave well-enough alone.
