Default 2133 Vista basic wireless issue

Issue: Limited or no connectivity. 168.254 ip address

    What I'v tried:
    1: updating all drivers.
2: disabling encryption on the router.
    3: uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.
4: advanced driver options. turn off all the fancy settings and made sure all the power settings were at 100%.
    5: hard set IPV4 settings.
    6: changed channel on router.
7: netsh int ip reset log
    8: netsh winsock reset catalog
9: many restarts, many cusses, starting to think about returning it because this shouldn't be so hard for a new system.

What really gets me is it doesn't even try to get an IP address. it goes stright to a 169.254 address. Normally when dealing with bad hardware it will sit there trying to get a ip. I'm really at my wits end.

Now my router works with about 5 other devices including a IPhone. I have been fighting with this thing for about 3 hours. About to either install a good os becuase this thing is crap or return it.

    Welcome to the forums chaoscode!

    Try this out:

start > run > cmd (or just start and then type cmd in the search box and hit enter)

    type in

    netsh winsock reset

hit enter and then try reconnecting to the wireless network. if that doesn't work, try reinstalling the wireless drivers

ha, sorry about that. It's definitely sounding like the card might be shot...Have you tried another network? You're not doing any mac address filtering on the router are you?

Yeah, especially with the via processor in there. Runs a lot better with 7! Good luck!

yeah, its almost done installing now. I got this thing on clearence from compusa for 249$ so if the wifi is bad, ill just replace it out of pocket. 249$ is to good of a deal to return it because of a bad wifi card. exp seeing it has ALL the upgrades including the 6cell battery. Just got a slim samsung dvd 22x burner for it.

crap. looks like its the card. Windows 7 is doing the same thing. straight to 169.254 address. guess I could test another network but would have to wait till tomorrow.

wootzzzz never mind, I donno what was up with my router but after doing a hard reset on it and resetting it up. it works fine. must have been something with the dhcp table and the mac address being miss routed.

169.254.x.x is the "link local" address range; what you get when the automation can't find anything else specified.
