After fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 I have no wifi proprietary drivers. They were when I booted liveusb.
How to fix that. (I have no cdrom and no network connection in ubuntu).
Boot LiveUSB.

If you have the option of a wired connection, connect that way just once and then the drivers will appear in the hardware drivers section (where now you get a blank space).
I had the same problem, my broadcom chip was detected when I booted from the Live CD, i.e. USB, but nothing when I had installed it.
I googled for a solution, and this is what I found:
b43-fwcutter is present on the LiveCD but for some reason it hasn't been installed. So insert your CD, or USB stick with the Live CD, and search for "b43-fwcutter", and you should find a b43-fwcutter.......deb archive. Install it by double clicking on it.
Go to this forum page and download the 2 files, just do exactly what is described to install.....

Worked for me,
Good luck!
Edit: Forgot to add the URL to the necessary forum.....ops:
I installed b43-fwcutter, the driver is detected, but it can't be activated. can you help me?
Thanks,
Adam
