    Default openSuse

Well I have testes some good Ubuntu variants so now I am going over to openSuse to see how that goes.

I like the Ubuntu based distros but I think they are a bit bloated or maybe I'm wrong

    We shall see

Software bloat, Change for Change's Sake (or because we can)
    and Bragging Rights wars over features;
all seem to dominate the OSS movement these days.

When you choose a distribution, you are passing off all of the
"what will be included" decisions to the distribution packagers.

Some distributions have a "Configure Your Own" web-based tools.
Some have the same sort of tools either GUI or command line.

And then, for the truly masochistic, there is Linux From Scratch:
    http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
Work your way through one of their "HowTo" step-by-step manuals
and you will feel like you just earned a MSc in Linux.

Just what do you have in mind by "minimal" ?

The tool's name is the same for both Debian and Ubuntu - "debootstrap"

You want a really minimal install?
Follow my "Hardy the Hard Way" here:
    http://forum.netbookuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=598
Just change the release name from Hardy to whichever you want.
That will take you to having X11 installed (about 600Mbytes total) -
then just apt-get install <whichever window manager> you want to use.

But you where posting in OpenSUSE - is that what you want?
The command name is different for *.rpm based systems.

Sounds like a borked patch made it into the final release.
