    Default Updates

I would rather try to install the driver first, see if it works, and then updating. In previous driver versions, you had to use the first standardkernel for the distribution. But after updating, you are able to choose the older kernel via grub bootmenue eventhough. So it should work the other way round too.

Any success already? I read reports about the prereleased driver working good for the Hp2133 in the forum I mentioned in my first post.

Change the file extension from ".tgz" to ".tbz". Their 2D driver tarball is like this as well.

The command: 'file <enter filename>' will also tell you how it is compressed.

    alright, step one complete
    I downloaded the driver
    renamed it
    extracted it
    installed it
    rebooted
    and....

    it broke my system
    so
at grub boot, I hit esc and let it automatically repair my xconf
    rebooted
    and...
    back where I started

    so

my next step (I think) is to copy over my current xconf with the one posted above...right?

going to wait until given further instruction but I'm thinking I'm halfway there

    oh also
I'm running XFCE (in xubuntu 9.04) and I was wondering if there is any way to get the panel to not start? Currently I have it 100% transparent but I would like for it to just not be there at all

    Default Yep.

You are right, that is your next step. If you are lucky, it just works then. If not, someone has to play with the xorg.conf again.
I am only common with Gnome, so I can't help you with that other problem. Isn't an option there, if you click the panel with the right mouse key?

alright then that's what I'm going to do

also yeah you can click the panel but it wont let you remove the "last panel" which is sort of stupid...oh well here I go with the xorg

    wish me luck!

alright what I did was goto the link mikez suggested and literally copied and pasted the associated 3D xorgconf into my existing one and rebooted

I got no errors and XFCE came up fine

    I installed compiz from synaptics

Opened terminal, typed in "compiz" and it tossed the "it aint gonna work" error:

    Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    No whitelisted driver found
    aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/xfwm
    no /usr/bin/xfwm found, exiting

so...I think SOME more progress has been made but still no cigar....so, what should I do next?

oh yeah, I'm getting this when I run things from command line, for example "firefox" throws this

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".

firefox still opens just fine, so its no big deal, but I figure you guys will know whats up
