After fighting for days, I finally got my new mini 5101 to play sounds from the speakers under Ubuntu 9.04. There are plenty of guides for the older models experiencing this problem, and none of them worked for me. It was this guy:

That provided a script to update the Alsa driver and configure it that made my night so much better. Just wanted to share.
After the script is done downloading and installing and doing its magic, you're presented with a list of options.I used the setting 'HP Laptop with headphone jack switch,' which is number 8. The codec on my machine is AD1984A. Worked like a charm after restart! So easy!
Now onto the microphone :P

On 2133 speakers work out of the box.
On my HP 5101 I had the same problem. I have alsa 1.0.16 installed. I looked at the script in the link above and instead of upgrading to alsa 1.0.19, I just added this line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
Then I restarted everything and the internal speakers work! (Headphones too!)
