Default Ubuntu 8.10's startup progress bar...

changes to weird colors when the progress item "switching VESA State" (or is it "Setting VESA State"?) shows up beneath the progress bar. The text beneath also changes to weird colors with vertical white stripes rendering the text from that point in boot thereafter until the password screen completely illegible. How can I fix this problem without a full re-install?

Does your screen become fuzzy and random colors appear. If this is so,

jump to command line mode and type 'xforcevesa'.

    Default S'okay

I managed to fix the problem by appending vga=0x037b to the startup line
