Ubuntu 8.10's startup progress bar... changes to weird colors when the progress item "switching VESA State" (or is it "Setting VESA State"?) shows up beneath the progress bar. The text beneath also changes to weird colors with vertical white stripes rendering the text from that point in boot thereafter until the password screen completely illegible. How can I fix this problem without a full re-install?

S'okay I managed to fix the problem by appending vga=0x037b to the startup line
