Default Worth updating xbuntu hardy heron to something newer ?

First of all, I think a plea for forgiveness is in order, as I left my poor old 2133 under the bed for a good few months after I changed jobs and had little use for it. Now Im interested again, and I would like to have a play around with linux once again.

So, the question is, should I try out the new flavours of ubuntu that are coming out ? Or is there little benefit and alot of performance hits for such a wee machine ? I am currently using xbuntu with the hardy heron core, its summer 2008 vintage.

The Ubuntu-9.04 (still Beta) is a very noticable improvement on my Cloudbook - -
I haven't tried it on my HP-2133 yet - but others on this forum have.

I'll second the upgrade to Jaunty.. but perhaps a couple of weeks after it's released.

It's a lot faster to boot and I think it's slightly faster on the desktop too. The one downside is there isn't (as far as I know) a closed-source graphics driver from VIA for it yet. That means you have to use the openchrome driver and in my experience, it just doesn't cut it for anything even mildly serious.

So perhaps hang on until VIA have pulled their finger out.. If you're not doing anything graphics-orientated (games, video, etc), give JJ w/openchrome a shot.

I've just wiped my Hardy Heron install and fresh installed xubuntu 9.04. My initial reaction is that it starts up more quickly and that wireless works out of the box (I had wireless working on Heron but it took a bit of Googling to get it going. In contrast 9.04 greeted me with a friendly invitation to join my wireless network on first bootup (however wireless did not work on the LiveCD.

I just use my 2133 for browsing and a little bit of light office productivity so the Via video doesn't bother me as an issue. I had acceptable video performance for youtube etc when running my older Ubuntu installation.

Of course if you just want to experiment I'd say 'yes - of course it's worth it'
