Default new GFX driver installation - ubuntu 8.10

I wonder what I must have done wrong. I installed the new VIA driver and my system does not boot fully. It gets to the point where it plays the welcome tune and then keeps showing different colours on the screen - white then grey, then green, red blue and then back to white. It does not proceed further and nothing else shows up.
How do I solve this? can someone please help?

Plug in an external monitor - your picture is running out the side of the machine -
You can use the "recovery mode" entry in the grub boot menu to gain command line access to fix the problem.

Thanks, I went through "recovery mode" and then selected repair X server and afterwards it booted fully. I guess this is alright for today. I will try more stuff tomorrow.

everytime you see the following lines, substitute them with your proper resolution (1024x600)

Modes "1280x768"
Virtual 1280 768
Depth 24

make sense?... all the depths should be set to 24

The two models use different PanelIDs also.
Depth 32 works? That is good news, it was broke in the prior Chrome9 binary.
