The major difference is in the screen size. The 5101 is a 10 inch screen and the 311 is a 11.6 inch screen (1366 x 768). Next is the price the 311 is $519 the 5010 is $399. In addition the 5101 is classified as a business netbook where as the 311 is classified as a home & home office netbook. Weight is also different. The 5101 is listed at 2.3 pounds where the 311 listed at 3.33 pounds. This information plus much more on both units is on the hp.com web site for your convenience.

Additionally, the 311 has the video acceleration capabilities of the Nvidia Ion LE chipset. The 5101 does not.

The keyboard looks to be similar to the 2140 keyboard, unlike the chicklet keyboard of the 5101 that I prefer. But this is subjective.

At 11" diagonal screen, this is taking the netbook concept to the limit. To me, that's a rather large netbook.
