Default HP Mini 5101 - Broadcom Crystal HD Mod - Compete

Ill post more about this on my Blog (http://blogs.technet.com/virtualizationjason) but I just finished adding the Broadcom Crystal HD card you can buy in the HP Mini 110 in my HP Mini 5101. It works perfect under Windows 7.

Posting more soon!

THX buddy, I follow your lead, and finally got everything worked on KMPlayer!

I underclock Atom to 1Ghz, and the average cpu usage around 40% !
here is some pics:

My Broadcom Crystal HD card came in yesterday.

I decided to open up my HP 5101 and install it.

The process was rather straight forward. I had to remove the battery, memory, keyboard.

The top cover was removed partially, just enough to allow me to insert the card and to attach a screw to hold it in place. It seems that the SD/MMC card cage ca act as a mini heatsync as long as the Broadcom card is attached via the small screw.

FYI, a Torx #8 driver is needed to remove the main screws, underneath the rubber pads.

I also followed Jason's links for the driver and the video player. The driver seems to be for all versions of Windows (XP/Vista) and it installed flawlessly in Win7.

Win7 has some issues with the player application and it gave me a stability message, which I, of course, ignored.

With the limited testing I've done so far, my findings are inconclusive.

I would welcome more detailed input from others who performed this "enhancement".

Regards...

After I was watched a few movies, I think the Broadcom HD solution is more than I expected, however, there are some flaws:
1. The DXVAed video cannot output through alternative CRT monitor, even with internal display disconnected. I tried extended the windows, doesn't work either, and the only way to fix it is via dual mode, copy exactly the same image to the external monitor.
2. The Broadcom card seeems consume a little more energy, but it produce lots of heat.

What is your setup for KMPlayer to be able to use the Broadcom HD acceleration?

And, do you have the Mini 110 or the 5101?

I owned a 5101.
here is what I did to make Kmplayer work, so does Potplayer which also support external decoder assignment.
1. press F2 get into filter control - decoder usage page
check "Always Use"

2. click internal decoder and uncheck MPEG2,H264,AVC,VC-1

3. click external decoder and you will find the default setting like this:

4. click external decoder search and then click add system codec:

5. find Broadcom Video Decoder and add it to the external codec list:

6. return to the filter management page make sure MPEG2,H264,AVC,VC-1 are checked:

7. navigate to external decoder page and change MPEG2,H264,AVC,VC-1 from default Do nothing to Broadcom Video Decoder:

8. Last step, click Video Processing - Renderer
chose renderer like Overaly mixer(Winxp) for best compatibility, or if your want to use Aero in Vista/Win7 you can choose VMR7/9

Now you can enjoy hardware decoder in Kmplayer

Thanks to everyone for the information. I did this install after my 5101 arrived and it's working well. I've had it installed for less than a day so don't have much to add but will post if I find any issues.
