Were you after a permanent external solution or anything that'll get the job done? Be wary of no-name thin externals as they don't last long... There are several HP and IBM marked fakes on ebay.

This sony is one of only a few slim externals worth trying...

    These are dodgy...

Oh by the way... Go windows 7, don't bother with vista...

7 is everything good about vista but as easy on the system as xp and comes with the best driver database and updater known to man...

thanks, going to get dvd from hp, sent me coupon. get the dvd555s over the
dvd1170? its smaller. n think it has light scribe, and u get nero with it, so its kinda the better deal?

wondered if i could run windows7 rc on it?

follow same procedure i did on my desktop and install from dvd drive?

guessing mini has boot sequence? or no, because theres no internal dvd drive?

how do you get mini to boot from disc to install os?

and that made me wonder how hp installs xp if theres no dvd/cd drive?

    thanks, any info appreciated.

needed a case too. say a leather one that wraps around mini. its at:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/FOR-HP-MINI-1000-1035-2140-CUSTOM-NETBOOK-LEATHER-CASE_W0QQitemZ330342477630QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_0?hash=item4ce9f22f3e&_trksid=p3286.c0 .m14&_trkparms=65:3|66:2|39:1|293:1|294:50

wondered if theres a problem with heat o these, and that kinda case bad idea because i cant leave mini in case, i have to take out for cooling?

thanks, really appreciate the help. mini 2140 should come with ac power supply, coorect?

and whats the deal with fake dvd drives? like guici handbags?

    thanks, p

HP populates the hard drive from an image. I installed all of my applications from an network hard drive but you can do the same from a external USB hard drive, external memory card or a mapped optical drive from another networked computer. There are several items listed on this site on how to do an install using a memory card or external hard drive.

The leather case looks prety nice, and it's a lot cheaper than other leather/bible cases I've seen around... but no cutouts for the vents, which I would worry about. The underside, even elevated by the 6-cell battery, does get a little warm, even if it's not alarming.

Hi, I have a HP Mini 2140 with Windows XP Home Edition SP3, a Intel Atom 1.60ghz, with 1 gb of ram and 160gb hard disk. Windows 7 works fine with my HP mini specifications? I have only 1GB of ram!!!
    Thank you.
