Hey, I'm having trouble with installing a new 2.5" 500Gb SATA Western Digital Scorpio Blue HDD i recently bought to replace the standard 160Gb HDD thats comes with the HP mini 2140.

I inserted the 500Gb Drive into the laptop and screwed it securely into place but as I start up the laptop, a message saying that it cant detect the Hard Drive comes up in a MS DOS-like screen and then stops there,

How can i get the laptop to detect the 500Gb mass storage drive so i can install an operating system on it?

thanks, any advice would be appreciated!

I have a HP2140 and the hard drive just snaps into a standard SATA connector mounted on the motherboard and is a very simple installation. I first cloned my new hard drive using a USB to SATA connection and Acronis True Image application. Worked like a charm. I have done this at least five times. Original 5400rpm drive to a 128gb SSD drive to a 120gb 5400rpm SATA drive back to the SSD drive and then back to the 120gb SATA 5400rpm drive and finally to a 250gb 7200rpm SATA drive. No issues with any of those installations.

Greetings all--I'm new to this forum and hope to glean some sage advice. Be forewarned, I'm one of those guys who knows just enough about computers to be dangerous (i.e. I'm an amateur).

My 2140 HDD failed with too many bad sectors (note to all, don't teach your 3.5 year old how to play ripped movies on your netbook as s/he will change the movie every minute or two.... I wonder how I got those bad sectors?)

The mini's current configuration is a 2.5" 160 GB, 5400 RPM SATA HDD, with 1 GB RAM. I'm thinking to replace the HDD with a faster (7,200 RPM) and larger capacity (<=500 GB) drive. I've see various options on newegg & tigerdirect, but I'm not sure if I need to match the GB/S rating or be worried about changing the RPM, or if I have to use an HP replacement (significant cost difference which would = trash can for my beloved 2140).

Trying to be optimistic, the silver lining is that I'll upgrade to 2 GB RAM while I have it open.

Thanks in advance for any input!
