    It's quite easy to explain:
    1. VIA seems to be 32-bit processor, so it can support only 32-bit versions of Linux, Windows XP or Vista
    2. 32-bit processor/system means, that operating system have (theoretical) access to 4GB of memory, from which 2GB is for each running application, 1GB is for operating system, and usually 1 GB is reserved/void/not used.
    3. Only 64-bit software and OS can have full access to memory over 2GB
ERGO: there is no easy way, to use memory over 3GB, and there is no way you can install 3GB memory chip.
    4. To avoid complaints from users, that installed 4GB and operating system reports only 3GB (or even 2) they decided to write "2GB max" in specs.

All 32bit OS's can see and use more than 2GB RAM.
The limit is down memory address's, which were set out 20 odd years ago.

With Vista SP1, you can see up to 4GB RAM.
Although you can effectively use around 3.5GB RAM.

With 32bit OSX and plenty of 32bit Linux Distros, you can install and use way more than 2GB RAM.

The 2GB RAM lilint on the MiniNote may actually be a 'Hardware' limit.
As theres no point in HP using expensive 64bit capable hardware on a system with a 32bit CPU.

my post in hack and mods (http://www.hp2133guide.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=400)

does anyone know whether this 4gb sodimm would work in the 2133

    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...80414#Overview

    Manufacturer Part# : MA940G/A-A
    Dell Part# : A1539052

    price us$144

    ------

i also read in the support docs the c7 cp can support 4gb, but can the hp2133 support 4gb thru a single sodimm ... when i get home i will look closely at those words

    ------

i typically use some memory as ramdisks for temp & internet temp files, and turn the page file off

    -------
the previous machines i have built with 4gb ram saw 3.5gb + ... depending on how many hardware devices they are supporting, especially on the pci bus, the more devices plugged in the less memory available

a single application may only use 2gb, some applications, eg adobe after effects, may be able to use more if a (sometimes works/sometimes doesnt) /3gb is added to the c:\boot.ini file
the latest PC i specced, and built up has 2xquad zeons with 32gb ram (8x4gb dimms, but have since found some 16 and even 18 dimm motherboards with 2xpci-e16x and pci-x and pci) and xp64 ... a little of topic, but in after effects which is still a 32bit application, starts a separate process for each core, each of each cores can use upto 4gb, though i limit this to 3.2gb so other tasks can still run, thus a rendering job can easily consume 25gb of ram

Actually, it is not the cpu but the chip set which controls how much memory can be driven.
The (marketing) documentation on the chip set in the mini-note claims it can drive 4G.
No mention if that has to be in two sockets or may be in one.
The technical documentation is still under NDA although VIA has promised to release it.

Rendering? Povray? BRL-CAD? Something else? Yup, those will swallow memory for sure.
You will also find the HP-2133 is a bit slower than the dual, quad core, Xenon systems.
The disk drive is a tad bit slower than Ultra320 scsi also.
On the bright side, it is only about the same price as one memory stick for those systems
and it will also drive an external monitor upto 1920x1080 (same as HDTV-1080p).
(Battery runtime is also longer than the battery time of a dual, quad core, Xenon.)

Any word on whether this has been confirmed to accept 4gb or not?
