Sorry to hear about your motherboard failure. Mine just went right now also. Here's the related thread:

How long did you have your HP 2133 for?

I could not be angrier. My 2133 just died. Yeah, I know, I am not alone. It is simply amazing how a machine that has been treated so well as this one (no mods whatsoever... not even RAM, because I already has 2Gb installed) has bitten the dust with the dreaded motherboard failure...
And the really bad part about all this is that the repair (motherboard replacement) here in my country (Guatemala) is worth 540 US$, which, by all standards, is not an option due to the price levels of new machines... Gosh, I can buy a Dell Mini for less than that here (lucky for me that I already had...)
After this, I seriously do not intend to buy anything else HP. To think that I've been a loyal customer ever since the trusty HP100LX days... I've gone thorugh a lot of machines, and considered myself to be a happy HP customer. Not anymore.

one machine failure shouldnt turn you away from a manufacturer
then again...my wife and I both had Dell inspirons before we had these HP minis....one day my battery stopped charging and then the power connector went bad and then her battery went bad and then her connector went bad..in the span of like a month, and we had only had them for 6 or 7 months at the time
and before that, my power cord had went all FUBAR and i had to do surgery on it to fix it....
and the integrated wifi didnt work...on either of them..
but then again they were also huge and heavy, unlike the small and light minis....
so I suppose we had 2 bad machines and that turned us away from dell..
Thanks for answerin'... I guess I'm finally over the fact of having lost a machine that I was practically in love with...
Now that that is over, I am interested in knowing if the 5101's architecture has anything to do with that of the 2133... I sincerely hope not...
Seriously, considering the speed with which both machines (2133 and 2140) were discontinued, I am just wondering if this 5101 was supposed to pick up where the others had left in the netbook offerings by HP... Should those of us with second thoughts wait for a second iteration of the new 5101?
Any thoughts would be most appreciated...
Yeah, having any machine die on you is no fun.
The only thing the 2140 shared with the 2133 were the battery and the outer design. It had completely different guts inside (well, maybe the hard drive and ram might have been the same)
The 5101's motherboard will be slightly different than the 2140's because there's no express card slot and an additional usb port has been added. It also has a faster CPU than the 2140.
If you don't need to get a replacement right now, I bet they'll have an 11.x-inch within a month or two with either an Atom or the Celeron SU3500. The SU35000 is about 25-33% faster than the Atom but still gets decent battery life.
I should be getting a 5101 this week so let me know if you have any questions or anything you want to see!
My 2133 is chugging along fine... Used for work and play daily... Set the fan to max on external power from day one and the plastic mesh on the vent removed...
My HP/Compaq Tablet which ran heaps hotter than the 2133 is still alive and kicking...
If/when my 2133 kicks I'll get a 5101 with internal 3g... That, imho, would be netbook perfection...
