Would you be so kind as to give some examples, please? (Or, better still, tell us ALL the changes you've made...)Originally Posted by nikoladd
I should be recieving a SSD soon for my 2133. (Hopefully tomorrow.) (I've pre-emptively [if that's a word] changed my signature to reflect this.)

jkkmobile.com has some interesting comments on SSD's and their story. Worth a read prior to jumping into the SSD arena.
Thank you - I'll look it up. (A specific link would help, of course.)Originally Posted by rlarson_mn

Indeed. I'm used to manual tweaking and tuning of specific hardware/software settings so my changes are from many places and mostly previous experience. I like lists of tweaks though to remind me of forgotten ones.Originally Posted by baius
Here's a link I searched for, but couldn't find yesterday when I wrote the post above:

It's a good list of SSD related tweaks from the dell mini forum. These apply to HP as well of course.
My point is that SSD has a different behavior than a HDD and that should be taken into account. The thing about win7 handling SSD's properly is plainly false. win7 has some minor adjustments taking into account default behavior of some services(disables defrag) and that's it. Prior versions of windows require about the same changes to perform well with an SSD.
I'm writing about video hosting and laptops in my free time.
More info on SSDs from Tom's, mainly bout a new Samsung drive tho...

Thank you for the links - and the "thinks"... :wink:Originally Posted by nikoladd

(I've "upped" your reputation, btw, in thanks.)
I've got my Intel X25-M 80GB today, and, strangely enough, I'm looking for the very first time at XP being installed yet - I haven't even moved the mouse yet! (I think I'm scared to...ops: )

A key consideration to me is startup time. Here's my own observed timings.
Hitatchi 5400, with:
-> Vista (and ~10 programs):
. 79 seconds.
-> XP - fresh (First Restart):
. 45 seconds.
-> XP - Via Chipset/graphics:
. 45 seconds (!)
-> XP - Security (" & Comodo FW & AV and AVG AV):
. 50-55 seconds.
Intel SSD, with:
-> XP - fresh:
. 33 seconds.
Notes:
-> I measure the time from when I first "Power On" to when desktop first appears.
-> Vista was passworded, so it was PO to PW (password).
-> If a "error" ("Windows did not close properly", etc), I would let the computer load, turn off, and then try again.
-> "Vista <-> XP" wasn't "apples to apples" - I haven't "fully loaded" XP yet on either HDD. Conversely, Vista only went to the password screen, XP all the way to desktop.
Turn off:
-> Vista (fully loaded)
. 30 seconds.
-> XP@5400 (All, inc fresh):
. 12 seconds.
-> XP@SSD:
. 5 Seconds.
I have yet to have a serious play (battery life, Office 2007 "performance", Security suite active, chipset significance, TaskManager@100%), but when I do I hope to report back.
