Not qutie sure what u guys are facing. There is 1 major contribution is over heating. Anything that blocks the ventilation will give rise to this. This is also a CMOS setting for turning the fan on. For me, I had this freezing and did a fresh installation. It has not occurred after that.

    regards

Mine started freezing from when I first got it (Linux one). Now it seems to freeze within just 5 minutes of turning it ok; so is it likely to get hot in this amount of time?

I assumed that it was a Linux problem and since I was planning on putting WinXP on it I wasn't so bothered, but now I have read these posts about it happening on WinXP as well, it's got me worried.

I'll try being very care about not blocking the vents, and see if that works. Otherwise what options do I have?

    Bruce,.

    i got a HP2133 (second-hand) with XP installed.
the previous owner had no problems with freezing, but
since I got it and installed Arch Linux, it freezes irregularly, too!
it happens i.e. after 5minutes uptime, after staying 1h idle or after 5h working..
i cannot see any association to overheating!
but I use cpufrequtils, so maybe changing the CPU-Freq can be a reason like
the Xp power option 'HP Optimized' ?

by the way my first thoughts were that it is a sata-driver problem, because the only
association between all freezes is a HDD access!

People are talking about two different problems here, some are sure it's the heat and some talks about the speed stepping...

In my case it's the speed stepping tech, where the machine is changing the CPU speed, all depending on the load of the machine.

First I thought it was the heat, it was not the heat, monitoring the system and a CPU temp of max 50, still a stalling machine.
Second I thought it could be the HD, so I bought a new disk, still the same problem.
The stall was almost always when I "started" to do something on the machine, like maximizing a window or starting program, just hitting me instantly with a stalled machine.
Did set the system to use the Home/Office power scheme and the problem was gone.

If you have the problem, don't use the Portable/Laptop scheme for a week, see if it did help. I'm sure it will.

Right now I'm having my 2133 on a pillow in my lap, the temp is ~60c, so it's getting a bit hot here, the system will start to warn me at 80c, and a nice autoshutdown at 90 (yeah, it's to hot..).
But it works! Not a single strange stall sense I did stop using any automatic speed stepping.

    hello again,
I disabled any speed stepping utils and my machine freezed again ..
But it only freezed in battery mode - with AC connected, everything was fine
If it actually worked for you, then my problem could be Linux specific

    //edit:
it also freezes with AC power on! argh

    It helped! Thanks!

Mine was freezing from the start when I tried to get on the internet. It was happening every five minutes - total lock up. Had to switch off by holding down the power button every time.

My husband looked at it and found that the 'keyring' seemed to be using up a ridiculously large amount of the cpu so he - somehow- managed to disable it. It still prompts me to choose a password when I first log on but I ignore it and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Last night I was on it for ages with several internet tabs open and it didn't freeze once!! Yippee!! So at the moment I'm happy. It seems fine on AC or battery; I have used the Open Office programs, GAIM and the internet with no freezing since the keyring change - so far so good. I know nothing about LINUX and the email support at HP don't either so I am really hoping that I have no problems, otherwise it will be going back to Dixons. I hope not though because I do love the look of it and the fantastic keyboard -and it was sooo cheap (£185).

    Here's hoping....

    Default mini 2133 SLED10.2 1.6Ghz 1GB

I am having the same issue on suse enterpise. Iread this forum and for now making sure that my mini doesn't get heat up. If it still keeps freezing, I'll test other workarounds. HP support would be the last option. thanks to everyone who posted the solution.

I had the same problem that my HP 2133 was freezing. Setting Fan always on in Bios solved the problem.
    Thanks for the solution.

No I am mistaken. Freezing continued. It happened with upgraded 250 GB 7200 rpm HD. I replaced it with 160 GB HD, it still is the same. Now I placed back the original 120 GB HD, now it seldomly freezes but also when I shut down the Vista, it shuts down, the screen goes black but the computer power still remanis on. I really regret that I bought this computer.
