A small, light weight, low power HD media player appliance.
Also low cost: $100 - no subscription to streaming video required.
It is a SoC device, uses the Realtek RTD1073DD video processor.
That video processor includes a MIPS 24K core -
Which runs, you guessed it, Linux (2.6.12.6-VENUS).
Includes 128Mbyte of flash and 256Mbyte of SDRAM -
more than enough for a general purpose Linux appliance.
Of course, it also includes the Realtek hardware audio/video decoder on the same chip.
Brad has an unboxing video up:
http://www.liliputing.com/2009/10/un...yer-video.html
to which I added a bunch of comments.
He intends to have a user review posted on the device later this weekend.
I have started a thread on my playing around with the
machine's guts:
http://forum.netbookuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=990
The machine has access to the Linux console serial port
on an internal header - just to make hacking easier.
EDIT:
Will re-enter the above information and links on my own, new, site. RSN![]()

And this little <$100 is so "hackable" I can't leave it alone:

It will take me awhile to get everything I have written on sites
around the world entered into my own site.
but if my keyboard doesn't wear out....
Yes, I am still here. Just been busy with the new site I am setting up.
Decided that the little Asus box was probably only one of many devices
people would be interested in. Which is why the site name is generalized.
I am using a full CMS/Groupware site package that (should) allow support
of multiple devices and member interests in an organized manner.
The site is only 5 days old today, but starting to come together - -
it might even pass the 10 member / 1,000 page views a day milestone
before it is a week old.
Small devices in general: http://MiniModding.com
Which does not mean it is limited to the HP mini, it means "small devices".
Finished off the first two months a few days ago.
Past the 100 member milestone, I am not typing to myself over there anymore.
Seems to be one of the few (perhaps only) technical oriented, collaborative, web-site
for Media Players. It has not turned into a fan club, which I think is good.
A full-service site, I even have the Popcorn for sale on the front page.![]()
