Default How do I play smooth HD video on 2140?

Thought switching my 2133 with the 2140 would give a big performance boost, but really not that big of a defference, maybe just a tad faster overall (running vista on both), but with the Atom I though that video would run smoother, but cannot get it to run the test HD videos from Microsoft to run smooth, what am I doing wrong?

Else the 240 is very nice, can vrite faster on the 2140, trange but the keyboard is just a tad better, and a good surprise is the 2140 had wireless n standard, very fast wlan .

What you are doing wrong is to try to play HD video on a netbook Screen is too small (you cannot even see all the pixels on internal display) and it was never meant to play such a content on such a machine.
You can try some extra-super-duper solution like playing with super fast software codecs (CoreAVC) or optimizing device performance (by installing XP instead of Vista and getting rid of all CPU-intensive tasks in background - from antivir, down to file indexing service). But still I would not expect too much success - mostly because HD content requires even up to 70% of processing power of my core2duo 2,4GHz (and 2133 and 2140 have power of 600-800MHz CoreSolo).

I play compressed DVD movies all of the time on my HP2140 but none of them are HD. I also can play standard DVD movies (from a folder not Optical Drive) with no issues. Your asking quite a bit for the HP2140, IMHO some day they will soup up a netbook but when they do there are tons of heat issues that would have to be addressed along with battery length.

Wanted to hook it up to my LCD tv, and saw some youtube videoes illustrating other Atom 1.6ghz machines that could run HD videos wothout any lag, so was hoping that the 2140 was better than the 2133.

But I guess it is not made for that kind of use, was just expecting som more power of this Atom cpu, don't really see much improvement over the VIA cpu, on my 2133 I get 2.0 score in vista, and on the 2140 I get 2.8 score, not that much better.

But anyway, am still very happy with the 2140, some of the small problems with the 2133 seems to be fixed, that is very good, but guess i have to use my 2ghz due core laptop for the heavier stuff.

Improved stuff I have found with the 2140:
Better bluetooth performance (had trouble with my Nokia phones and FTP mode)
Draft-n for wireless network, mee liky .
The touch pad "off" button does not light on sudden.
Not the long flashes when in standby mode, just a quick flash from the led.
Bette keyboard, just a tad longer travel, and feals not as smooth.
Better battry life, up to 7+ hours full cpu speed, according to vista, got about 5+ hours on the 2133 with cpu on half power. But those numbers is not really to trust, but overall maybe 1-2 hours longer battery.

And still all the other goodies of the 2133, man i love the feal and looks of the HP Mini .

2140 and it's Atom had one big advantage over the old VIA C7 processor: power consumption and temperatures. Apart from this there is only one big disadvantage: thr screen (until high-resolution version will be unleashed).

Bluetooth is for sure exactly the same (might be placed in different part of the device)
Draft-N made by Intel is... piece of crap, as nearly no draftN router can connect to is with maximum speed of 300Mbit.
I'm suprised about keyboard - isn't it just... identical?

And yes, I think that 2140 is a good upgrade from 2133, but I'll wait untill higher resolution screen will show up.

Yes had planed to wait for the higher reselution two, but just could not, should though come out this month I think. Heat was not a big deal on the 2133, the 2140 also gets hot (even though not as hot as the 2133). But then again higher resolution, it it really usable on such a small screen, some stuff is quite small on the current resolution, and my guess is that the higher resolution version, will be very expensive (for at netbook), maybe only avalable with the SSD drive?

Draft-n works fine, it is full 300mbit on my 2140 and Belkin N1 router, very fast data transfer (always not the maximum speed, but much faster then 54mbit).

Keyboard is different, a little more travel, and more rough feal (not as smooth), fells better to type on, though still hit two buttons often, since the keys are very close.

Actually I had the same idea. I read that some guys played HD videos on Atom machines and they ran smoothly. Since we all share the same architecture more or less the 2140 should've been able to do the same.

to make a long story short: normal codecs won't work. you need the CoreAVC's et voila, 720 HD will run smooth. Higher resolution won't...

and of course a netbook isn't designed to run HD videos but it's nice to know that they can... ;-)

from what I understand, the atom chip isn't more powerful... just more energy efficient.

My mini came with Vista Business.... once it finallly crashed into and endless loop of automatic rebooting, I installed XP, and all of my vids (HD too) played amazingly smooth. It showed me what a resource hog Vista was...

Screw Vista... go back to XP..
