1.2ghz and 1.6ghz processors

This is a discussion on 1.2ghz and 1.6ghz processors within the General Discussion forums, part of the Main category; Are these CPUs different chips or just the same in different states of 'tune'? Thanks...

Sorry, I don't think anyone really knows for sure. If I had to make a guess I would say they are the same. I had trouble finding numbers because all the sites listed the cpu's with 400Mhz FSB, when the 1.2 and 1.6Ghz models are supposed to have 800Mhz... VIA's site doesn't even list the 1.6Ghz model anymore...not sure what's up with that.

Anyways over on this page, go down to "Esther" (ultra-low-voltage, 90 nm): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

You can see the multiplier is increased for each model, so it's probably just the same chip getting overclocked.

Ok, now for a realy newby question: Is overclocking good or bad for a chip?
Does the chip overheat and have greater wear when it is overclocked? And is overclocking simply a BIOS adjustment?

    Hi Mike,
Its certainly not 'Good' for the CPU, but if you don't go too silly its all that bad for it.
Basically, by using it at a higher/faster rate than your ment too. So you'll ware it out quicker. Plus the extra heat thats generated will also effect the other hardware componets.

And is overclocking simply a BIOS adjustment?
In must cases 'Yes' but the motherboard needs to be setup to allow you to make the changes.

I looked up on wikipedia and it appears this is false: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

The 1.0ghz 1.2 ghz and 1.6ghz cpu's are all different chips with different multipliers, wattage, etc...

How much is the TDP of the 1.2Ghz VIA? How much power does the entire chipset consume?

I ask this because while the HP mini-note has a reputation for being hot, the 3-cell battery life seems the same as most Atom-based netbooks, and the Atom-based netbooks are known to use an older, less efficient chipset.
